Highstead Lecture by Harvard Environmentalist, Dr. Eric Chivian

Redding, CT
September 18, 2009

Dr. Eric Chivian, Prominent Harvard Environmentalist,
to give Highstead Lecture “How Human Health Depends on Nature” at the Redding Community Center

Internationally-known author and environmentalist, Dr. Eric Chivian, will present a slide lecture on his book, “SUSTAINING LIFE:  HOW HUMAN HEALTH DEPENDS ON BIODIVERSITY” at 7:30 p.m., Friday, September 18, at the Redding Community Center, 37 Lonetown Road (Route 107).

Dr. Chivian’s lecture, How Human Health Depends on Nature, will explore how species diversity acts as an insurance policy for humans and the tragedy that would occur if these organisms disappeared.  Time Magazine describes Dr. Chivian as “a highly trained scientist who tells stories like a teacher with the bedside manner of the general-practice physician he used to be.”

The presentation is part of the lecture series, Woodland Conversations, promoted by the Highstead Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting land stewardship and forest conservation locally, regionally and nationally.

In his lecture, Dr. Chivian will examine how everything we do that damages the environment, including releasing greenhouse gasses or polluting oceans, soils and fresh water systems, ultimately ends up affecting all living things.  Surprisingly, little attention has been paid to how our health depends on the health of the natural world.

Eric Chivian, M.D., is the Founder and Director of the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School.  In 1985, he shared the Nobel Peace Prize for being a co-founder of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, and in 2008, he was named by Time Magazine, as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.  Copies of “Sustaining Life:  How Human Health Depends on Biodiversity” can be purchased at the lecture and Dr. Chivian will be available for signing.
